Sunflower hosts Reader’s Theatre

The Sunflower Theatre presents two classic American short stories – “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe, performed by James Campuzano, and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, performed by Desiree Henderson, Friday at 7 p.m.

Reader’s Theater is a style of theater in which actors use vocal expression, minimal set, props, lighting, sound, and other media to help the audience understand the story.

“The Tell-Tale Heart,” first published in 1843, is told by an unnamed narrator who endeavors to convince the reader of his sanity while simultaneously describing a murder he committed..

“The Yellow Wallpaper,” first published in January 1892, is early work of American feminist literature, illustrating attitudes in the 19th century toward women’s physical and mental health.

The story depicts the effect of understimulation on the narrator’s mental health and her descent into psychosis.

It all starts at 7 p.m. at the Sunflower Theatre, 8 E. Main St. Doors and cash bar open at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at www.sunflowertheatre.org and at the door.
