The two things I love most about this country are freedom and our public lands on which to exercise and enjoy our freedom. I am mostly apolitical and have registered as independent most of my life.
Wanting future generations to enjoy as many as possible of the gifts of nature that I’ve enjoyed, I generally vote for whatever is in the best interest of our environment. Economies, dynasties and governments come and go but once lost, the environment, like our public lands, will be gone forever.
So, it seemed like a good time to start paying attention and I went to a county commissioners meeting on Tuesday. I was impressed by the public comments, the way they were received and the meeting in general until one of the commissioners gave a brief update.
He mentioned that he had attended the meeting held by the office of Rep. Jeff Hurd in Dolores on Monday and that it was of no consequence.
I was surprised that he considered the time and efforts put forth by a couple hundred of his concerned constituents to attend this meeting only to be stood up by a “no show” to be of no consequence.
It seems like that situation deserves some sort of explanation or maybe even an apology from Hurd’s office. But, as mentioned, I am not very politically oriented.
Is that sort of disrespect from our representative acceptable and inconsequential?
