The Cortez Police Department will host an academy to give community members a glimpse into what they do

A hands-on Citizens Academy is coming up at the Cortez Police Department to give the community a better idea of a day in the life of a law enforcement officer.

It starts on April 3 and runs every Thursday for seven weeks, until May 15. It’s free to attend and goes from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cortez Police Department, 608 N. Park St.

Participants will practice with tasers, “make determinations in a real-life DUI situation,” and “get wrapped during FBI tactics,” a press release announcing the academy reads.

They’ll also have the chance to meet local officers, dispatchers and detectives, ask questions and hear their stories.

“This is your VIP invitation to an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the world of law enforcement,” it reads.

“Whether you're planning a date night, a girls' night out, or a fun evening with friends, neighbors, or family, the Citizens Academy is the perfect way to spend your Thursday nights.”

Participants must be at least 18 years old and will be “vetted to ensure a safe and engaging experience for all,” the press release said.

Registration for the Citizens Academy is now open at www.CortezPD.org under the “programs” tab. Call the Cortez Police Department at (970) 565-8441 with any follow-up questions.
