Cortez City Manager Drew Sanders was one of four finalists for a city manager position in Fruita, and the town selected another candidate.
That means Sanders will stay in Cortez.
“Fruita is a good community, and much like Cortez,” Sanders said. “I respect Fruita City Council’s decision.”
Sanders said the “opportunity had presented itself and I felt obligated to explore it,” and that while he was in Fruita, he received “an outpouring of care and support from the community here.”
“It was nice and humbling,” Sanders said. “I’m really grateful to be part of this community.”
“I’m so pleased that Drew is staying in Cortez and will be able to continue the great work he has been doing over the last three years,” said Mayor Rachel Medina.
Medina said she believes the interim city manager in Fruita got the position, “which I think speaks to how much of a lift it is to orient someone new to a community,” and is precisely why she’s glad Sanders is staying.
