I was glad to see this article covering local food pantries in The Journal, and it was both informative and insightful. However, I felt that the generalization that the patrons of Hope’s and Grace’s Kitchens and Good Sam’s are homeless and drug-addicted is incorrect.
I volunteer at Good Sam’s, and the community members who shop there are simply poor. I think it is easier to blame people for their economic status instead of accepting the fact that our system creates inequality. I am grateful to work and interact with the wonderful volunteers and customers of the Good Samaritan Food Pantry and encourage our community to continue its support of all of our food pantries in the coming years.
