The school ranked in the top 40% of Colorado elementary schools

On Thursday, the Montezuma-Cortez school district announced that Lewis-Arriola Elementary School was ranked on the U.S. News Best Elementary School for 2024.

The school was ranked No. 259 out of over 1,000 Colorado elementary schools, placing it in the top 40%. It scored 73.62 out of 100 points.

It was also ranked as the No. 1 school in the Montezuma-Cortez school district.

The “distant rural” school, as it was labeled in the report, has 118 students enrolled from kindergarten through fifth grade. The report added that 46% of these students are “economically disadvantaged.”

The student-to-teacher ratio is 16-to-1, and there are eight full-time teachers. The students scored 45%, which is at or above proficiency in math and 55% in reading.

This is higher than both the district and state percentages in these subjects. The district’s scores were recorded as 21% in math and 33% in reading, while the state’s was 30% in math and 41% in reading.
