Don’t cut sheriff’s department staffing

Let it be known to the citizens of Cortez and Montezuma County: The County Board of Commissioners is proposing and/or considering eliminating five deputy positions in the Sheriff’s Department.

Is this a good time to be downsizing law officers in our area? Drug trafficking, drug abuse, drug related deaths and drugs infiltrating our schools – even at the grade school level – are all grievous and of great concern.

We are living in days of lawlessness and brutality in our streets. Known terror groups are infiltrating America at all levels of our society. Child abuse and sex trafficking are rampant.

Please, commissioners, if you need to cut budgets, how about starting with your own salaries? You are public servants, correct? Former President Donald Trump gave up 100% of his salary for the welfare of the citizens and nation he served.

Please, commissioners, please do not cut or eliminate law enforcement positions in our Montezuma County Sheriff's Department.
