Southwest Colorado Youth teams begin District 4 tournament

The season is winding down for Southwest Colorado Youth Baseball teams.

The SWC Micro All Stars wrapped up their 2016 summer season on Sunday with an end-of-season tournament. Competing in seven games in just two days, the Micros finished the tournament with a 5-2 record to finish as runners up to the winning Durango Blue.

The SWC Minors, Majors and Juniors all began District 4 tournament play on Tuesday against teams from Durango and Bayfield.

Hosting the 8/9/10 tournament at the South Rotary Field, the Minors won their opener against Durango on Tuesday, 15-2, and took down Bayfield on Wednesday, 19-9.

They will play the winner of Durango and Bayfield on Friday – and if necessary, on Saturday – to determine the District 4 champion. The district winner will advance to the Colorado Minors State Tournament from July 16-20, which will also be hosted in Cortez.

The SWC Majors have also made their way into the district championship. After a 17-5 win over Bayfield on Tuesday at Durango Folsom Field, the Majors beat Durango 16-6 on Wednesday to move on to a title matchup against the winner of Thursday’s contest between Durango and Bayfield.

The district winner will advance to the Colorado Majors State Tournament in South Denver from July 16-20.

The SWC Junior team received a bye in its district opener, but fell to Bayfield 22-11 on Wednesday at Fairgrounds Field in Durango. The Juniors took on Durango on Thursday evening, but the score was not available at the time of printing. A loss would end the Juniors’ season, while a win would move them onto another matchup against Bayfield on Friday.

The district winner will advance to Grand Junction from July 16-20 for the Colorado Juniors State Tournament.

Cortez was the only team in District 4’s Senior division, so they automatically qualified for the Senior State Tournament in Denver beginning July 14.
