Businesses and organizations chosen as winners in this year’s Best of Cortez & Montezuma Awards will be announced on Oct. 2.
Fenceline Cider in Mancos will hosting the winners-only event from 5 to 7 p.m.
There are 96 “Best of” categories – from “Automotive” to “Wellness” – and within each category, a first-, second- and third-place winner.
The 288 winners will be showcased in the Best of Cortez & Montezuma County magazine published Oct. 2.
“When people move here, they pick it up,” said Joe Nelson, the multimedia sales executive at The Journal, in reference to the magazine.
Winners will also be featured in The Journal, who makes these awards possible, and online at bestofmontezuma.com.
A big misconception is that someone at the newspaper decides who wins, Nelson said. In reality, the community votes for the winners, and the paper just publishes its results.
This year, the community nominated local businesses and groups from June 26 to July 7, and voted on who’s best July 14-July 28. By the first week of August, votes were tallied and winners were known.
