Survey asks Cortez residents about their Internet use

A survey on the City of Cortez website asks respondents to answer questions about Internet speeds.

The city is collaborating with Montezuma Community Economic Development Association and the towns of Mancos and Dolores, as well as Montezuma County, for the Fiber to the Premises project. The initiative seeks to bring high-speed broadband Internet to every household in Montezuma County through fiber optics.

Most homes in the county have access to Internet speeds between one and three megabytes per second, according to the survey. The Fiber to the Premises project seeks to bring speeds of up to 1 gigabyte per second to the county.

The survey asks if people want faster Internet speeds and what types of devices they currently use with Internet. It also asks if people are willing to pay a sales or property tax of less than 1 percent to pay for faster Internet speeds.

Survey respondents also can take an online test to determine their internet speed.

Mancos trustees voted last month to contribute $4,100 to a feasibility study on the project. The price of the study is based on the number of addresses in a region, costing $6.50 per address.
