The Dolores Mountain Quilters’ Guild on Tuesday announced the winners of their biennial quilt show, held Aug. 16 and Aug. 17, saying that the Best in Show award went to Darcie Marquez. Other winners were announced in multiple categories.

In total, the show saw 3,000 raffle tickets sold and 115 quilts exhibited over the course of the two-day show. Nearly 700 people attended, according to Dolores Mountain Quilters member Judith Swain.

The event also utilized more than 70 volunteers who worked at least 950 hours helping make the show possible, Swain said.

“It was wonderful to hear the attendee comments and to see the public immerse themselves in the show. Locals and visitors all appreciated the artistry of the quilts, the vendors and our handcrafts boutique items,” said Lou Ann Jacobson Ball, chairperson of the quilt show committee.

About $5,000 was raised throughout the event, and that money will be distributed to local nonprofits. Even local businesses were able to enjoy the quilt show, as were their customers.

Linnea Peterson, owner of the Dolores Food Market, said, “It was wonderful to hear our customers raving about the quilt show. What a great event for our community.”

Raffle tickets were bought for the chance to win one of the guild’s quilts, and Mason Zigler was named the winner out of the thousands of entrants.

Other quilts that were named winners at the show were Linda Jahrus (large bed quilt), Marquez (medium bed quilt), Jan Shepherd (small bed quilt), Ila Starks (child’s bed quilt), Heather Musclow (throw/lap quilt), Judy Bryan (large wall quilt), Cathy Duggan (medium wall quilt) and Jacobson Ball (small/mini wall quilt).

Other winners included Ruth Ann Thompson (art quilt), Olive Gray (youth quilt) and Suzanne Butterfield (other).

LouAnn Burkett, one of the show’s attendees and quilt maker, expressed her perspective of the event saying, “The quilt show was the happiest place to be in Montezuma County last weekend.”
