League of Women Voters plans sessions about proposed Montezuma County sales tax

Sales tax would provide revenue for county services

Starting July 13, League of Women Voters of Montezuma County, in conjunction with KSJD, Cortez Public Library and Mancos Public Library, plans three informational sessions about a county sales tax ballot initiative.

The sales tax will be on the general election ballot in November, and the League is hosting the presentations to explain the county sales tax and how it would be used if it passed.

A presentation will be given at each session with facts and information regarding the proposed tax.

All are welcome to attend. Karen Sheek said the presentation will allow residents to learn more and ask any questions.

“The purpose of all three of these meetings is to provide voters in Montezuma County with the opportunity to come and hear about the proposed sales tax,” Sheek said. “Why it’s necessary, what the money will be earmarked for, what services will benefit and why we’ve reached a point in the county where we need to have a sales tax as opposed to relying on some other sources of revenue.”

The sessions will take place July 13, July 24 and Aug. 10

  • Saturday, July 13, at 10:30 a.m. in the Calvin Denton Room at Empire Electric Association, 801 N. Broadway in Cortez.
  • Wednesday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Mancos Public Library, 211 W. First St. in Mancos.
  • Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at Lewis-Arriola Community Center, 21203 Road S in Cortez.

“We really want people to come out,” Sheek said. “Come prepared to ask questions. Listen to the presentation, so that they will be able to make an informed decision.”

“We’ve got to increase those revenues so that we can generate more money to be able to run the things that those who live in Montezuma County would love to see continuing being covered like law enforcement,” Sheek said.

Before attending one of the sessions, Sheek encouraged community members to view their property tax bill to get a better understanding of where the taxes go and how it is divided among various county services at this point in time.
