A motorcycle crash on U.S. Highway 160 left two riders with serious injuries on Saturday. The crash shut down the highway for about an hour.
Two motorcycles were involved, colliding side by side in a merge lane at mile post 57.2, approximately a mile east of Mancos, according to Capt. Nathan Lyons with Colorado State Patrol. Both riders, who were traveling together, were ejected from their motorcycles.
One rider was from Ignacio, and the other from Durango. Both were transported to Mercy Hospital in Durango via ambulance, Lyons told a Journal reporter. Lyons did not identify either rider.
Colorado State Patrol released a traffic crash report to The Journal on July 15, written by Trooper Steven King. The Ignacio rider was identified as Joseph Wancura, 67. The rider from Durango was identified as Joshua Coombs, 50.
Wancura’s motorcycle skidded through the eastbound lane before going off the road, where the motorcycle tripped, ejecting the rider. The motorcycle turned one and three-quarters times while airborne.
Coombs’ motorcycle traveled across the westbound lane, ejecting the rider, who landed near the centerline. The motorcycle stopped on the westbound shoulder, Lyons said.
