An Aztec man with a lengthy criminal history was arrested after breaking into a house and stealing the man’s dirt bike, police say.
Serafin Seanz Carter, 39, was charged with second-degree felony aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon, third-degree felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fourth-degree felony felon in possession of a handgun, and fourth-degree felony probation violation.
The charges are in connection to an armed burglary in the 1000 block of McKinley Lane in Bloomfield. Carter reportedly forced his way into the home, owned by a previous acquaintance Rene Alicea, the criminal complaint states.
Bloomfield Police were called to the home at 10:34 a.m. June 20, where they found the living room “in disarray” and Alicea with a “swollen bruised right cheek” and blood on his face and clothing from reportedly having been “pistol whipped” by Carter, the complaint states.
Alicea reportedly told police he was sitting in his living room, when Carter allegedly “forced open” the door, causing it to break away from the door frame, and then allegedly fought with Alicea, said he was “taken down to the ground” and then pistol whipped, the complaint states.
Alicea told police after seeing the gun, he “did not move for fear of being shot,” at which time, Carter reportedly “took a green and white Yamaha dirt bike” from the residence and allegedly loaded it into a red pickup truck before driving away with it, according to the criminal complaint.
Police arrested Carter, who according to court records has a lengthy criminal history in San Juan County dating back to 2003. Previous crimes include drug charges, aggravated assault and aggravated burglary. His competency had been called into question in a 2023 aggravated burglary case, but he was deemed competent to stand trial. However, the case did not proceed, according to court records.
Carter was prosecuted in 2023 on a charge of breaking and entering. He pleaded no contest and received 18 months of supervised probation.
Carter is being held in the new case and will have a preliminary hearing at 8 a.m. June 27 in Aztec Magistrate Court.
