Panthers, Bulldogs enter final stretch in baseball

Dove Creek begins district tournament, while Montezuma-Cortez hosts Centauri

CORTEZ – As the calendar turns to May, Montezuma-Cortez and Dove Creek are entering the final stretch of their regular-season schedules. Here’s a look at this weekend’s action:

Dove Creek enters District 1-1A tournament as top seed

The Bulldogs (5-11) received a first-round bye and will face fourth-seeded Antonito (8-8-1) in the district tournament semifinals on Friday, starting at 10 a.m.

No. 2 seed Sierra Grande (13-1) and No. 3 seed Nucla (7-10-1) will square off in the other district tournament semifinals matchup on Friday, starting at noon.

The district championship game will start at 2 p.m. Friday. The tournament will be held Friday at Ignacio.

The top two teams out of the district tournament advance to the regional round of the state tournament, which will be held on May 11.

League-leading Panthers face Falcons at home

Montezuma-Cortez (9-8, 3-1 in Intermountain League play) will host Centauri (7-12, 1-5) in a Saturday doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.

The twin bill will take place at Parque de Vida in Cortez.
