Denkai Animal Sanctuary will host clinic Feb. 24

The Denkai Animal Sanctuary, now at 209 W. Main St., will accept walk-ins only for its pet clinic on Feb. 24.
Services include pet vaccinations and microchipping

On Feb. 24 beginning at 9 a.m., Denkai Animal Sanctuary will host a clinic offering services including pet vaccinations, worming and microchipping.

Denkai Director Floss Blackburn said they hope to make clinics more frequent to help provide spaying, neutering, vaccinations and other services at a low cost.

They are working with two foundations that are providing grants to help fund the initiative.

The sanctuary plans to add veterinary help outside of clinic time once or twice a month until they can hire a full-time veterinarian.

They hope to host another clinic in March or April.

Right now, Blackburn said two veterinarians are willing to help out. One will do surgeries; the other, wellness clinics.

The clinic on Feb. 24 at Denkai, 209 W. Main St., will accept walk-ins only. Denkai will serve the walk-ins as quickly as possible.

Services at the clinic include free vaccines thanks to a grant from the Petco Foundation, $15 rabies shots, microchipping and $10 worming. The $30 fee will help offset Denkai’s costs.

“We’re trying to collaborate and help the community as much as possible,” Blackburn said.

Because Denkai can’t house animals overnight, sheltered animals are fostered out. Most of the foster families, 95%, are on the Front Range, making travel costs another financial hurdle.

Blackburn said Denkai has considered buying the old Cortez Bed and Breakfast, allowing overnight stays, but needs money.
